When I was growing up, I was always told that having God at the center of your marriage will ensure you have a happy marriage. My parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles all not only said this, but showed it by praying together, worshipping together, and doing Bible studies together. And the research supports this very sentiment.
MarriageHelper.com partnered with Barna in 2021 to complete a study on several different topics, including marriage satisfaction and the likelihood of going to marital counseling. What they found is that while those who keep God at the center of their marriage and I defined it above, i.e. Practicing Christians, is 94% somewhat or very satisfied, Christians who are not practicing are significantly lower by 11% and non-Christians being the lowest of those surveyed.
As instructed in our faith, our goal should be to put God in the middle of ALL of our relationships, our marriage being the quintessential example of this. In so doing, our hearts will be oriented in service to others. This was even highlighted in a post we shared three years ago with mercy breeding satisfaction in marriage.
Even if you’re marriage is doing well, we encourage you to find ways to enrich it further. One way we recommend is taking a marital inventory like the ones we reviewed here. Another couple of options is to try these marriage conversation starters, these marriage tips, or improving marriage communication. And it is our prayer that God stays at the middle of your relationship.
